Unlike the busy roads of Victoria, the peninsula offers low-traffic farm roads, rolling terrain, and access to regional parks. The climate is mild year-round, and the scenery — from ocean views to farmland — makes every ride worth it. Whether you're a seasoned gravel rider or just getting into the discipline, this area has routes for every level.

Top Gravel Routes Near Saanichton

1. Lochside Trail to Swartz Bay

A classic. The Lochside Regional Trail runs north from Saanichton toward Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. It's mostly hard-packed gravel and paved sections, making it ideal for gravel bikes. The full out-and-back from Saanichton is roughly 20–25 km depending on your start point.

2. Mount Work Regional Park Loop

For riders who want more challenge, the roads and trails around Mount Work offer elevation, forest scenery, and a real workout. Combine Hartland Avenue with park access roads for a satisfying mixed-surface loop. Best on a gravel bike with 40mm+ tires.

3. Saanich Peninsula Farm Roads

Some of the best gravel riding on the peninsula is on the quiet agricultural roads around Central Saanich. Roads like Oldfield Road, Keating Cross Road, and Stelly's Cross Road connect you through farmland with minimal traffic. Perfect for a relaxed 30–50 km loop.

4. Galloping Goose – Lochside Connection

Link the Lochside Trail with the Galloping Goose Regional Trail for a longer adventure into Victoria and beyond. This combination gives you access to over 100 km of connected trail — one of the best urban-to-rural cycling networks in Canada.

Gear Tips for Saanich Peninsula Gravel Riding

• Tires: 38–45mm tires are the sweet spot for the mixed surfaces here. Tubeless setup is worth it for the farm road sections.
• Layers: Even in summer, coastal mornings can be cool. Pack a light wind jacket.
• Navigation: Download the route on Komoot or Trailforks before you go — some farm roads aren't well-signed.  The heat map option will also lead you to some pretty awesome trails.
• Water and snacks: Services are limited outside of Saanichton and Sidney. Carry more than you think you need.
