Fall & Early Winter Riding on Vancouver Island: September to December

Make the Most of the Season — and Make Sure Your Bike Is Ready

Vancouver Island is one of the best places in Canada to ride year-round, and the September-to-December window is genuinely underrated. The summer crowds thin out, the trails settle after dry season, and the light turns golden. Here's what to expect — and how to make sure your bike is up for it.

September: Prime Time

September is arguably the best month to ride on the Island. Temperatures are still warm (15–22°C), trails are dry and fast, and you'll often have routes to yourself. The Galloping Goose and Lochside Trails are at their best, and if you're heading into the highlands around Shawnigan Lake or the Cowichan Valley, the scenery is unmatched.

Bike check: After a hard summer of riding, September is the perfect time for a post-season tuneup. Check your brake pads, inspect your chain wear, and make sure your tires still have life in them before the wet season hits. Book a tuneup at Brentwood Cycle →

October: Rain Starts, Fun Doesn't Stop

October brings the first real rains, which is great news for trail conditions if you're on dirt — the dust settles and roots and rocks become more predictable (once you learn the new grip levels). Road riders should start thinking about fenders and visibility.

Bike check: Install fenders if you haven't already. Switch to a wet-weather lube on your chain. Check that your lights are charged and functioning — daylight hours are dropping fast.

November: Commit to the Wet

November is full-on Pacific Northwest fall. Wet, moody, and honestly beautiful if you dress for it. The trails around Mount Doug, Hartland, and the Saanich Peninsula stay rideable, and there's a real camaraderie among the riders who show up in November.

Bike check: Your drivetrain takes a beating in wet conditions. Book a drivetrain service — chain, cassette, and chainring inspection — especially if you've been riding through the mud. Cables and housing may also need attention if shifting feels sluggish. Book a drivetrain service →

December: Short Days, Big Rewards

The window of rideable daylight shrinks to a few hours, but that just means you plan smarter. Early-morning gravel rides along the Lochside or a lunch-hour spin through your local loop are completely doable. Some riders use December as a base-building month — longer, slower rides to set up a strong spring.

Bike check: Make sure your lighting system is dialled for commuting or early/late rides. Front and rear lights that meet legal minimums are a must. It's also a good time to store or service your summer-specific bike and set up your winter commuter or all-rounder properly.

Don't Skip the Pre-Ride Inspection

No matter the month, a quick pre-ride check takes two minutes and can save a long walk home:

  • Tires inflated and no visible cuts or cracks
  • Brakes responsive with adequate pad life
  • Chain lubed and clean
  • Bolts snug (stem, bars, saddle)
  • Lights charged (October through March)
